It was cold and wet and he hated it.

Kylo had not been in Chiselwall long. He'd been there a week, perhaps - he wasn't sure the exact length due to having to cool his heels in a cell until he was calm enough to be reasoned with. That had been stupid on his part, but the situation he'd been in back home, the terror and fury he'd felt upon seeing Luke, and then the loss of the Force one right after another had pushed him past his breaking point.

None of what he'd been told made any sense to him, but after he'd scouted out the majority of the districts of the city and had spoken with many others he'd realized just how real it was and how bad a situation he'd found himself in. Part of him - more than he was willing to admit, truth be told - was relieved at being pulled away from everything back home. All the pain, the anger, the fear, and the pull he felt from both the light and the dark that had been tearing him apart was gone.

In its place was a strange sort of calm, though he could feel a rising hysteria underneath, and he knew that if he did not find something to ground him, to center him, he could lose far more than he already had. He was aware that his temper fits back home had been unhealthy, but he'd struggled to find effective ways to vent his emotions. Under Luke, before the man had betrayed him, he'd felt safe enough to talk, to share. But after the man he'd started to look up to as a father-figure had drawn his lightsaber on him, he'd changed. And Snoke hadn't tolerated any of his strong and sometimes wild emotions, instead mocking and chastising him when he couldn't control them, and therefore made mistakes.

Part of him knew how stunted his development had been, but it was hard to admit that sort of thing to yourself, let alone anyone else. He'd felt such a connection to Rey. He'd hoped that they could share things, but even she had turned on him in the end. He felt something snap in his hand and looked down, startled. The charcoal he'd found and had been using to write a list of things he needed to do had first snapped in two and then turned to small fragments as he'd clenched it tighter and tighter.

Snarling in disgust, he threw it onto a nearby snowbank, already dirty from the coal in the air from various things around the city. He took a deep breath, his emotions roiling just under the surface, and looked around, trying to find the shops he'd planned on visiting. He needed clothing, he needed work, and he needed a place that was not the inn. He knew he had to be quite a sight, standing in the middle of the sidewalk and having a mini-meltdown right in front of everyone.

Calm. I can be calm.

... ... ...

This is ridiculous.

Notes: Kylo hates everything and everyone right now.

The man hadn't been paying attention, too distracted with his own thoughts to pay much attention. Amy smirked as she shook her head, waiting until she was down the street and away from the idiot before she checked her new catch. Except what she saw didn't impress her. Barely anything, as if the man hadn't been there long at all. Dark eyebrows narrowed before she looked back around the corner towards the black haired male with the big nose. Once she had her eyes on a target, she never really lost them in a crowd, and he certainly stood out to begin with.

Poor guy was probably having a hard time getting on his feet. From what she heard from Nichol, one of newer displaced, one matching the vague description of her target, had been in a cell for a week to calm himself down. Got in a yelling match a time or two with Hayleigh in the process - who then had to go back and apologize later. Guilt weighed in on her and she huffed in frustration. Leave it to her to pick from someone so hard on their luck.

Tucking the wallet away, she carefully made her way back down the street, and ducked, letting it slide out from her sleeve and to the ground, where she picked it back up again. Amy noted the crack of charcoal, of his snarl, and she waited until he was trying to calm himself before she gentle patted him on the upper arm with his wallet. "'Scuse me sir, I think you dropped something."

She hardly ever gave back a prize, but this guy... This poor bastard seemed like he was having a really bad day and needed at least one good thing to come his way. By the Light, she'd be that one good thing if there wasn't anything else to come to him. She cracked a grin at him, attempting to be playful. "If it is, I'd say my reward could be a drink if you're willing."

He was taking deep breaths, his hands still clenched as he regained control. There was a trembling to his entire form, barely noticeable, and likely due to how tightly he was wound. The light pat on his upper arm startled him and he jumped. Damn it! I should have sensed her. Why can I not feel the Force? It isn't right.

It was only after his heart rate slowed down after being startled that he registered her words. He stared at his wallet for a long moment before slowly taking it and looking to the woman who'd been honest enough to give it to him instead of taking off with it. \"I - thank you. I didn't even notice it had fallen. Foolish of me.\"

The grin caught him off guard as did the suggestion for a drink. Brazen and forward. He liked that, and he had to admit he was feeling very much alone in this strange place. Kylo couldn't quite manage anything quite so friendly or enthusiastic, but his lips did twitch upward briefly. \"Sure. Why not. I've had a hell of a time, and you're the first good thing to happen to me since getting here.\"

He was also curious about her, and the hysteria that had been bubbling up under the surface settled down now that he had someone to focus on. He took another breath, felt his shoulders relax a bit, and then looked around them. \"I am not familiar with any local bars though, so you'll have to recommend one.\" His funds weren't exactly in a good spot, but he'd not spent anything yet, due to his time in a damn cell, so he thought he could spare enough for drinks and maybe a bit of food.

Though his rage and anger had often served him well in the past, they didn't seem to do anything beyond making him jittery and upset here, probably due to the lack of Force that he could tap in to. He could sense it, beyond his reach, but that didn't help in the least. \"My name is Kylo.\" Maybe this woman could point him in the right direction for a job? It ate at him that he was not what he was back home, but a tiny part he was trying to bury was relieved. It meant he didn't have to try to be something he wasn't - for either side.

Notes: He's still confused and frustrated, but having someone to focus on seems to have grounded him somewhat.

Dark eyes studied the man in front of her, watching for any hostility. He was so tense, so wound up, that she wondered if her 'generosity' would get her hurt. For a long moment, he just stared at the wallet she offered him, before he slowly took it from her. Was kindness really that foreign to him? Yes, she'd originally taken it, but the fact he couldn't believe someone would give it back made her wonder at what home was like for him. His voice was rough, deeper then she'd expected out of him, but it wasn't unpleasant either.

Sharp eyes caught the briefest twitch of his lips, and her smile softened as she watched his shoulders relax and his body language changed. The first good thing to happen to him since he got there? That was kinda sad. "Hard to believe a pretty lady giving you your wallet back is the first good thing to happen to you. How long you been here?"

Amelya gestured for the man to follow her, and once she was sure he would, she began to lead the way towards one of the nearest bars. The barkeep knew her and she was sure with a quiet word, he'd give them a discount on their drinks. If nothing else, she'd pay the barkeep back later. She stopped to let him catch up with her, her hands going to her pockets. Unlike most other women native to the land, she wore pants and boots, though her posture seemed to hide a corset under her shirt. "I'm Amelya. You can call me Amy, though, if you want."

She pushed the door open, and unsurprisingly, the place was fairly empty due to the time of day. It was well kept, though, and she waved to the barman as she led her companion to a table close to one of the walls. Amelya promptly took one of the seats with the wall to her back, her eyes scanning the area before she held up two fingers. "A pair of Crazy Grain beers over here, Pete, if you don't mind."

"Sure thing, Shipwright." Amelya turned her attention to Kylo again, smirking lightly at him as she leaned back against her chair.

"Crazy Grain is a local beer; hopefully you don't mind I ordered for both of us." It was also fairly inexpensive, but he'd find that out later when the bill was due. She personally liked it, despite the cheap price. "It's a personal favorite of mine."

Her softening smile when he let himself relax was amusing and sad at the same time. He was pretty used to people being on edge around him when he was upset - he had been known to throw tantrums, after all, and even those who'd never experienced one or who knew him personally could sense that molten temper lying just under the surface. He managed a slightly longer smile than just the quirk of his lips, but even that fell away quickly.

\"You'd be surprised. Not exactly had a good start here. I... don't know exactly. Maybe a week? I did not react well when I found myself here and they locked me up til I calmed down.\"

He fell in step next to her, curious where she'd lead him for drinks. He hoped it wasn't an expensive place, but that'd be on him for not specifying if she picked a place. He wasn't a good judge of character really, but if her initial interaction with him was anything to go by, she wasn't the type to do something like that.

\"Amy, got it.\"

He followed her into the bar, scanning the place curiously. It wasn't fancy, but it felt like one of the dives he'd frequented back home when he'd tried to escape all the confusion, pain, and anger he'd felt about his lot in life. He settled into the other seat across from the woman, though he didn't really like having his own back so exposed. It was easier to read her expressions from across the way than next to her, so he had to pick - read her better, or sit with his back to the wall.

The bartender answered with the woman's last name, so he now had all - or at least most - of her name. Amelya 'Amy' Shipwright. The smirk she gave him was odd - he wasn't sure why she was smirking. He didn't mind that she'd ordered for them both - he had no idea what was good. If it was her favorite, he'd give it a shot. See what he thought.

\"Sounds good to me.\" He shifted slightly, watching her curiously. \"So what can you tell me about this place? They weren't exactly talkative where I was.\"\"Crazy Grain is a local beer; hopefully you don't mind I ordered for both of us.\" It was also fairly inexpensive, but he'd find that out later when the bill was due. She personally liked it, despite the cheap price. \"It's a personal favorite of mine.\"

Amy leaned back in her seat, balancing precariously on the back two legs of the chair. One leg hooked over the other and the edge of her shoe wedged under the desk kept her from tumbling over entirely. She then draped one arm over the back of the chair and her other hand holding the one draped over the back for the sake of the balance as she waited for their drinks to come. There were others to serve, so it would take a few minutes for what they ordered to get to them. The thief mulled over his words, trying to think of what to say about Chiselwall. "Well... I heard they normally go over the basics when you arrive, but if you've ended up in a cell..."

The woman trailed off as she looked him over again, minutely shifting to balance herself better. "But, mad king tried taking over, opened portals to pull demons through, yadda yadda yadda... People got pulled through instead of demons, they got conscripted to fight instead... there was a war with our current King leading the charge to overthrow said mad king and they've still not closed the portals because things go boom if they try."

It was not the most elaborate explanation anyone could give, but she normally didn't deal with people who hadn't been given the rundown already. "Must have been some hell of a fight you put up."
