   Machine

   September 12

   Fives paused in the door to the hangar, stumbling slightly when Chibi ran into him thanks to the abrupt stop. He glanced at her before turning his attention back to the tension filled room. What had happened in the time they were gone? The tension was palpable, leaving a sour taste in the clone's mouth. He swallowed, trying to get rid of the taste. It didn't work.
    
   Instead, he focused on making his way to his twin, tapping him slightly with a knuckle to get his attention. The pink on the operative's cheek looked like a slap, and he couldn't help but look towards the angry blond tending to the Alpha on the other side of the room. Seriously, what had he missed?
    
   "Seems I missed some action? What happened?"

   "She's a spitfire from what I can tell." Fives commented with a light chuckle as he held his twin. The name that was dropped, Tech, meant nothing to him, but he could tell it meant something to the man in front of him. His brows furrowed as he saw all the expressions that passed over Echo's face. "What's wrong?"

   "Fuck." Fives said quietly, becoming aware of eyes on them. He wrapped an arm around Echo's shoulders and led him away from the main action. Once a good distance away, he turned to face him again, cupping his face. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you."
    
   Tears stung at his eyes, blurring his vision as he looked at the man he loved more then life itself. A part of him felt healed, whole even, even if there was still a hole from Tup and others he cared about. He'd long learned those would never heal. "I'm... I'm so sorry, Ech'ika."

   "We do. We really, really do." Fives pulled back enough to look at him. He cupped his lover's face, tears welling in his eyes as he took in every detail. Too thin - bordering on emaciated - long healed scars along his scalp - too many wrinkles at the corners of his eyes and along his brow from constant furrows - eyes paler then he remembered. But it was him. It was his Ech'ika. 
    
   He didn't care what others thought. He pulled the other clone close and kissed him deeply, lovingly, wrapping around him again as he let his tears fall. There was nothing but love in that kiss; sex was the furthest thing from his mind, and he just wanted to hold his twin and not let him go. "Fuck... you died. I watched the explosion - I watched you die. How...?"

   "Huh?" Fives blinked at his twin, not recognizing him immediately. His heart ached at remembering Tup... but this wasn't Tup. There was no teardrop tattoo under his eye and his build and height were all wrong. His memory went further back. After all, only two people ever got away with calling him 'Fi'ika.' His eyes went wide as it slammed into him like a freighter. "E-ech'ika? It... It can't be..."
    
   His voice was faint, distant as his mind worked rapidly to process this new information and then, he wrapped the other man up in a tight hug, squeezing him tightly without even thinking about any injuries the former man had. "Ech'ika..."

   Fives couldn't stop himself from giving a small lopsided smile when his vod commented about feeling like he got run down by a gunship, even if everything else of his attention was focused on making sure the damn fool didn't fall on his ass, least of all in front of so many of their brothers. Still, the more lithe of them steadied himself quickly enough and strode with purpose over to the assassin. Fives watched as he then grabbed a rifle from one of the clones he didn't recognize and slammed the butt of it into the back of the Operative's head. The other dropped limp like a doll and Fives made a mental note not to get this particular vod angry.
    
   He turned his attention to finding a spot out of the way to sit, and found a crate near the door to plop down and watch the goings ons. He was out of his depth right now, so best to keep his head down.

   May 25

   Before he could tell the little lady what the plan could be, she bolted out from behind him, and he just missed grabbing the back of her jacket. Damn she moved fast! After he focused again on the dog pile growing, he caught the gesture from Rex and nodded before looking back down at the brother he didn't recognize. They really needed to get a good meal in him. Or seven. 
    
   "Come on then, vod, let's get you off the ground." He commented good naturedly, as if the other hasn't just been shot. Fives bent down, carefully scooping up the other man before he approached, staying a safe distance away but showing he'd follow orders.

   Kintsugi

   May 24

   Fives didn't like this plan. No. Not one bit, but what choice did they have? He backed up to his twin, wrapping an arm around his waist to hold him close. In classic fashion, Skywalker acted without talking first, pushing the little omega off the pipe when she went to argue with Tech over the plan. The fear was palpable; like Wrecker, she had a petrifying fear of heights. Right. Still, she landed safely, with the other Jedi behind her. He glanced at Echo, giving a lopsided grin as he did, firing off another blaster shot. "Looks like our ride's here, eh?"
    
   Before either of them could hesitate more, he jumped, aiming to take Echo with him as their flight flew under them.

   "Just keep 'hold of my hand, vod." Fives said reassuringly, quietly, like he had with so many cadets when they were all much younger. Once Rex had moved, he in turn shifted to put himself between the seizing clone and the cover they'd ducked behind, just in case the other man flailed in that direction in his current state. He seemed to ignore his brother's comment - at least for the most part. Instead, he cursed, "they have fucking explosives now? What happened to a good zap?"
    
   In typical fashion, his humor was just off center, dark and fitting for someone who grew up on nothing but war and readying for it. Still, he kept Echo's hand in his, providing the other an anchor to focus on. "And like hell you're fine, soldier. Just focus on my hand, yeah?"

    Fives couldn't help but shoot the little lady behind him a lopsided grin when she exclaimed into the com on her wrist, probably at one of her friends. Cross, judging by the name. Probably a surname. She puffed out her cheeks a little in frustration before focusing more on them. He turned his attention to Rex, however, when the other man started talking to them. Stun, right. 
     
    He took a second to make sure his blaster was on the right setting before looking over at the older clone again when the Captain put a hand on his shoulder and sighed. He winced at the comment about augments not being done correctly and nodded.
     
    "Got it." He said quietly but firmly, before looking down at the man he'd been put in charge of, shooting him that same grin. "You're in good hands, friend."

   The long crawl of the years hadn't been kind to CX-2. He'd lost bits and pieces of himself during various missions, and whenever he'd found the mental strength to try and fight back, to regain some of himself - the glint of forgotten but not lost memories got him in trouble when he tried to claim them. Eventually he'd stopped trying; the programing he'd undergone had been harsh, punishing him any time he did anything they didn't appreciate. His chip being removed was a problem, but they'd shoved something similar in.
    
   It had caused so much agony that if he'd been upright he'd have dropped in a heap. Even thinking on it brought back twinges. He flexed one of his hands, shook his head to clear it and moved forward. There were multiple important marks there today and he needed to make every shot count. At least four wanted clone traitors, the potential for one or more Jedi, and if they were lucky - some of the higher rebellion leaders. 
    
   He settled into place to wait, shifting his rifle into a more comfortable position.

   Fractured

   It had been months since the batch of clones, including Omega, had been brought in. He wasn't sure how many - it was hard to keep track in the laboratory, where they were often kept strapped to the lab tables. Crosshair had been interrogated, subjected to various tortures just to see what he could take, and revived just to endure more of the same when they did push him too far.
    
   They'd done this in front of Omega, who was kept in the same room as them. When they were dragged back to cells, Omega often shared his, along with an ever rotating clone brother. They'd only ever shared the cell with the same one three times - Ace had been his name, and he was a pilot and gunner. But then he'd also disappeared like the others, never to be seen again.
    
   He sat with his back to the wall, as far from the front as he could get, his eyes sunken in somewhat from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnourishment. Omega had always been given enough food, but he was given barely enough to function. He'd had to encourage her to eat all of hers after they'd caught her sneaking some in for him and had moved to punish her. 
    
   Cross wasn't having any of that and had launched himself at the guard, earning him a swift beating and a concussion. Emerie had scolded him when he'd woken up on the table again, but he'd just set his jaw and refused to acknowledge her and what she said. He was also distrustful of her claims to be a female clone, worrying that it was a ruse to get in close with Omega, who was hurting due to being apart from her family. His family. 
    
   But thinking about them made him think about Tech, and the horrific death that his brother had suffered in trying to find him. He'd warned them to hide, to leave and to save themselves... but Omega said only part of the message had gotten through. He blamed himself for Tech's death. How could he not? Every action on that bloody planet, every step taken to infiltrate the Summit was because of him.
    
   He let out a soft curse, giving away that he was awake.

   Kintsugi

   Kintsugi: The practice of traditionally repairing ceramics with lacquer and gold with the understanding that it will never be the same as before it broke, but is still beautiful because of it.

   They had no idea what they'd find on the other end of the transmission, but Captain Rex swore up and down the voice they picked up was Echo's. It was his number. No one else had his number. CT-1409. It had to be him. Who else could it be? The man followed after Deadeye and the others as they worked their way through the tower, opening doors one by one to find what they were after. 
    
   The alpha's head snapped up when he heard Tech say they had found it, and he hurried to catch up, as did the pair in front of him, his brain momentarily distracted by their healer's scent. It was a reassuring thing, comforting in its familiarity, as was the scent of the man next to her. And yet, it felt like a hole was in his heart, his very soul without Echo next to him.

   Shattered Hope

   Staring up through the remnants of the cable car as it fell, his eyes were locked on Wrecker's face as he plummeted. A small glance to the side, to where he knew Omega was, and another to where he knew Echo and Hunter were. This wasn't supposed to be how this went. It should have been a relatively in and out job to plant the homing beacon. And it would have been, had there not been the complication of Saw's rebels.
    
   There had been no time to see each of them before he'd taken the shot. They had to live, and to do that? He had to fall.  He had one last glimpse of the car before the clouds surrounded him.
    
   Goodbye.
    
   ----
    
   As he fell through the cloud cover, into the valley below, Tech got to work trying to detach his magnetic grappling hook. When that didn't go as planned, he cut himself loose from it. The forest canopy and the rocky cliffs were racing up to meet him at such incredible speed. If he didn't get his other, standard grapple ready it was unlikely he'd have enough time to even attempt to save himself. 
    
   Struggling for a moment, the sheer terror near paralyzing him, he finally got his hands working and fired the hook at what looked to be a very well rooted tree growing out of a downward sloping shelf on the cliffside. The hook found its mark but it wasn't a good anchor, stripping the branches and leaves from the tree. It slowed his fall down and jerked him to the side away from the train-car, but his arm was nearly torn off as he tried desperately to stop his fall entirely.
    
   The arm was all fire and agony now, but he knew he had to make it move again. He used his left hand to call the hook back to him again, gasping in pain as it settled back into the gun and shook his hand badly. He closed his eyes. There's no time. You can't focus on it. He grit his teeth, forced his eyes open, and used his good arm to lift and somewhat stabilize it as he twitched his fingers until they deployed the hook again.
    
   There.
    
   Tech had one moment of satisfaction, before the tension hit the line and his arm, already damaged from the last attempt, tore off entirely. He couldn't stifle the scream when it happened, the agony ripping past any control he had. He wasn't sure how much longer he fell, his body tearing through the branches of a tall tree, before he slammed into the ground and darkness took him.
    
   ----
    
   When he woke, he could tell it had been a few hours. He could hear the sounds of a search nearby and pushed himself to his feet. Agony ripped through him as he moved, and he knew even without his scanners that he'd injured himself in ways that would need medical attention and soon. But he wasn't about to let whoever that was find him. The others would have left, assuming him lost - dead - and he should have been. Squinting around him, he realized that his goggles had been badly damaged and pulled his helmet off. The car was not far off, and he hobbled over to it, dropping the goggles nearby. Maybe that would be enough to get them to leave.
    
   After a moment of consideration he tossed the helmet closer to where he'd fallen. It was beat up and had massive cracks through it. That plus the goggles and... he looked up into the canopy above. Somewhere up there was his right arm. So they had his helmet, his goggles, and a detached arm. Not a full body, but with where he'd landed, and all the things on the way down, he suspected there were shreds of fabric, skin, and perhaps flesh above. 
    
   It took all of his considerable will to force himself to stumble away, leaving as little of a trail as possible. He'd get through this. Somehow.

   Distant Echoes: A Second Chance

But when listening to the strange signal, Rex had known immediately who's voice they'd heard. Despite every one of his brothers technically having the same voice, each of them had their own tells, a familiarity that those who were close to them could pick up on. And this voice? He knew it was Echo.
     They were nearing the room where the signal originated from, though they'd had to wait for data to be transmitted to track Echo. And just when he thought things were going well, the door they were trying to get through wouldn't open - sealed shut as part of a trap.
     Wonderful. Rex drew his blasters, taking aim and grimacing as he took stock of their numbers.
   We are the ones who will never be broken.
